Political intervention from the very top prompted state-owned RATP to improve its Paris suburb line quickly, with new rolling stock designed for better comfort and egress. The TGV may be the prestigious image of French railways but for many passengers the RER Parisian suburban express is the everyday reality. "When the train arrives it is very imposing, it seems very large, and when you are inside you have the impression of being in the second- or third-class hold of a car ferry," says Yo Kaminagai, director of design and cultural projects at operator Regie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP), of its existing RER A service.
