Salmonella cost estimate updated using FoodNet data

New information is now available from the foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) concerning the incidence, severity, and medical consequences of Salmonellosis has made it possible to refine previous estimates of the economic costsresulting from foodborne Salmonella infections. The way in which FoodNet monitors foodborne pathogens and foodborne illness is documented. Use of cases in FoodNet sites to derive the national Salmonella estimate is discussed: the cost estimate also usesnew data on medical costs taken from the MarketScan database and the estimate also includes lost productivity. Premature death represents the largest component of Salmonella costs.
