A personal view of today's NHS

I was reluctant to accept the invitation of the Vice-Dean to participate in a meeting called to discuss a modern, future National Health Service (NHS). I told him I was an angry old man, 80 years old, more concerned about today's NHS than the future. I was angry because much of the spirit that built and maintained the NHS, in which I had spent 48 years, had been dissipated by politicians, civil servants and managers, and the contracts they had negotiated.
