A programme to deepen and Droaden professional understanding between construction engineers and archaeologists has been Launched by the European Union in an effort to stop the unnecessary destruction of archaeological monuments due to development, urbanisation and road building. Overall co-ordination will be undertaken by the Institute of Field Archaeologists which has appointed independent consulting engineer Gifford as partner and advisor on the programme. Gifford has its own team of archaeologists who regularly work side-by-side with the company's consulting engineers on a variety of projects requiring archaeological knowledge and skills. It is widely recognised throughout Europe that archaeology is not given due consideration early in many engineering and construction projects.
