The important Questions ... How do we free up creativity in engineering design, and bring talent on?

Manufacturing is central to a balanced economy. Three million people are employed in the sector in the UK: it accounts for half the country's exports and 75% of its industrial research and development. And yet, in spite of this, the UK, along with many other industrialised nations, faces a skills crisis in science and engineering. Companies have an interest in encouraging talented schoolchildren to study the subjects at university or in becoming technical apprentices. The UK also wants to boost expertise in areas such as high-tech manufacturing. Various programmes have been set up in the UK in recent years to address this issue. These include The Science and Engineering Ambassadors Scheme - a government-led joint initiative with science-based employers sending staff into the country's schools in an attempt to inspire more young people to become scientists and engineers.
