Vegetable Production in Periurban Areas in the Tropics and Subtropics - Food, Income and Quality of Life -

Feeding the growing world population, particularly in developing countries, is the overwhelming challenge of the future. Twenty years ago national organizations in developing countries and the donor community have placed emphasis on ensuring global food supply on the national level, mainly by increasing food production in rural areas and establishing storage facilities in order to cope with the problem of seasonal shortages of staple food, be it on a national level or in specific regions of countriesfacing structural food deficits. By applying this strategy insecurities of food supply were reduced, but the problem of food security for all groups of the growing population is still far from being resolved. Further actions are deemed necessary, particularly with respect to inhabitants in and around cities.
