WHEN I MENTIONED AN Oklahoma wine trip to my AWS San Luis Obispo chapter colleagues, they met me with responses varying around the theme of "why?" Why indeed! After reading cover to cover Leon Adams' first edition of Wines of America in 1973,1 was inflicted—my wife says obsessed—with the desire to visit all of America's wine regions. Oklahoma would make 46 states, so why not? Off I went. Almost overnight, mimicking in reality the overnight land runs of 1889, Oklahoma has gone from two wineries in 1997 to 17 today and probably well over 20 by the time this article sees print. Why the surge? There seems to be no single reason. However, certainly the encouragement afforded a small group of amateur winemakers by a favorable legislature seeking more tax dollars as well as pushing tourism is not to be dismissed.
