New 2010 guidelines from the Metaldehyde Stewardship Group will make the timing of slug pellet applications more important than ever. Despite the cold winter and dry spring and summer, which will have restricted some slug populations, growers should still assume that slugs will be around at drilling, says David Glen, independent consultant for Styloma Research and Consulting and honorary professor of bio-sciences at Cardiff University. 'If we get rain from now on, slug numbers will explode," he predicts. "So it's essential that growers assess the risk of damage ahead of drilling."
