The Council of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society noted a letter sent to the Department of Health on 2009 premises fees during the September Council meeting. The Council was reminded that it had no decisions to make on the matter of premises fees, which were the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Health. However, the letter had pointed out that substantial increases in fuel and pensions costs directly incurred by maintaining the inspectorate should be reflected in the fee paid for premises. If this was not done, the letter went on, then there was a fear that the new regulator when it becomes operational would not be founded on a sound financial base and therefore the burden of costs would be disproportionately borne by individual pharmacists.
