Government takes lead on AMD - Golder

Government has taken the lead in dealing with the acid mine drainage (AMD) challenge on the Witwatersrand's goldfields following Cabinet's approval of the 146-page AMD report, says ground engineering and environmental consultancy group Golder Associates principal Andre van Niekerk. The report was compiled by a team of water and geology experts, and presented to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on AMD, in December 2010, and, this year, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan indicated that R225-million had been set aside to deal with AMD.
