The Maximum Amount of lead permitted in drinking water will be cut by 80 per cent by 2013, Environment Minister Michael Meacher has announced. The new compulsory standard for lead is part of the new European Drinking Water Directive, which revises existing EC standards. The Directive takes account of the latest scientific and medical advice, as well as recommendations from the World Health Organisation. Following a consultation exercise, the Directive has been transposed into English law by Regulations laid by the Government.
