Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME - Tab.l reports a list of abbreviations and acronyms) in combination with capillary GC-MS was used as a monitoring technique for the collection, detection and identification of volatile compounds of aromatic and medicinal plants (3,8,10). It was first introduced by Arthur and Pawliszyn in 1990 (l).In this connection the PDMS layer was coated onto the outside of a needle of a syringe-like device. Zhang and Pawliszyn developed and applied this technique for headspace sampling in 1993 (13). In 2000 Chromtech(Idstein, Gemany) introduced an inside-needle technique for vapour sampling, Solid Phase Dynamic Extraction (SPDE), also known as ,ma-gic needle". The goal of this new technique was to overcome several limits of SPME (fragility of the fiber, unprotected stationary phase coating). For headspace sampling (HS-SPDE) a fixed volume of the headspace volume is pulling up and pushing out in an inside coated needle for a specific time, thus the analyte can accumulate in the polymer coating. But the main advantage of the SPDE-tecrmi-que is the higher amount of polymer that is inside the needle. The volume of PDMS coated on the SPDE needle wall is about 4.5 fiL in comparison to about 0.6 nL coating a PDMS 100 ,Ltm SPME fiber. Bicchi et al.
