Effectiveness of plant products against sheath rot, Sarocladium oryzae (Saw.) Gams and Hawksworth in rice field

Rice is affected by a number of fungal, bacterial and viral diseases. Among the fungal diseases, sheath rot caused by Sarocladium oryzae (Sawada) Gams and Hawksworth is becoming increasingly destructive in India and other South Eastern countries ofAsia (Anon, 2000). Hence a study was undertaken to know the effectiveness of plant products to sheath rot under field condition. A field trial was conducted with IR 50 at Paddy Breeding Station, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore during laterabi 1999 in a Randomized Block Design (RED). There were three replications and the plot size was 2m X 2m. The plant population was adequately maintained with 20 X 15 cm spacing. The experiment had 6 treatments with an uninoculated control. The plants were inoculated on 72 days after sowing by inserting a single chaffy grain culture between bootleaf sheath and culm and covered with moist cotton. The first spray with plant products were imposed 7 days after inoculation and second spray 15 days later. Thecontrol plants were maintained without inoculation and with water spray. The disease intensity and yield parameters were assessed at 20 days before harvest. The percentage of disease incidence was calculated and presented in Table 1.
