In April, members of the Greater Okefenokee Assn. of Landowners (GOAL) were called to active duty when a storm caused a limb to down a power line, sparking what would become the largest wildfire recorded in the Eastern U.S. in almost 200 years and thesecond largest in the lower 48 states since 1918. Before it was over the converging Sweat Farm Road, Big Turnaround Complex and Florida Bugaboo wildfires had burned more than 580,000 acres and at its peak involved more that 1,500 personnel working to control the fires, according to a Georgia Forestry Commission.
