By 1904 there were 66 tea estates in Travancore of which 24 were in the Central Travancore district, where the total area under tea was 8,000 acres. Between 1904 and 1927 the number of estates rose to 46. Early UPASI meetings were much concerned withthe bogey of over-production, and there were even discussions on measures to restrict crop, but after 1903 the overall position improved with new markets for tea opening up and increased world consumption. The local mood was that of vigorous optimism, which was reflected in the yearly additions of land brought under cultivation. Both ends of the district saw much activity.
