The Travancore Tea Estates Company was at first run from wherever the Manager happened to be living. Letters from London were sent to Bonami, Pambanar and in 1906, to Panniar Bridge when Knight was opening Surianelli. McArthur lived on Tungamullay, which as his own property, while he was Manager, but as soon as the road from Mannan's creek was traced plans went forward to build a Manager's bungalow and office on land between Munjamullay and Granby. Work started in 1919 and the colony, which was completed in 1922, consisted of a single storied bungalow, two clerk's quarters, stables, an office, and two sets of lines of seven rooms; the whole costing Rs.37,258. The site was jokingly called "Pandavarmedu" by the head clerk V.M.Nagamony, in reference to the five heroic brothers of Mahabharata, the Pandavas, who had to take refuge for a time in thick forest. The first occupants of "Pandavarmedu" also happened to be five people; the Manager, E.C.Sylvester, two clerks, and two personal servants.
