Prior to the movie Titanic's opening, critics decried the film's record-setting price tag of approximately $200 million. While the ship built for the movie was the largest and most expensive single structure ever made for a film, a strong argument can be made that the realistic and dramatic scenes of its breakup and sinking played a large role in making the film a blockbuster. And a true blockbuster it is. So far, the film has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and won 11 Academy Awards out of 14 nominations. M Industrial Mechanical Inc. (MIM), an industrial construction company specializing in large equipment installation and structural steel fabrication and erection, was instrumental in recreating the cause of the tragedy for the film. The company originally contracted to supply the structural steel trusswork that would be the supporting frame of a nine-tenths scale movie set of the famous "unsinkable" ship. But, before it was over, MIM took on the biggest job of the movie — sinking the Titanic.
