摘要:This article attempted to draw attention to the concept of culture and its effects upon performance appraisal practices, and argued that appraisal provides an excel ent example of a HR practice which bears culture’s influence. Findings suggested that British appraisals tend to be more participative and to place greater emphasis on individual achievement. Chinese appraisals, however, appear to be utilized more for reward and punishment, and Chinese employees seem less confident in appraisals. Overal , the conclusion was that the practice of appraisal has been adapted to suit the cultural characteristics of a specific society. Limitations of the study were recognized and managerial implications, as wel as future directions for research were discussed.
