Introduction

The Square Mile is a remarkable patron of a particular kind of" architecture. It rebuilds its 270ha continually, and replaced over half its eight million square metres of office space in the development cycle of the 1990s and noughties. More than 100 major buildings were commissioned from a wide range of architects and the period saw large changes in planning policy and design approach. These were driven by the needs of the burgeoning financial sector, competition for tenants from Canary Wharf and the West End and a new attitude to street space after the IRA bombings.
