Renewed focus on learned activities

As of March 2004 I have assumed the mantle of chairman of the Mechanical College Board, replacing Peter Hopwood, who has served as chairman for the past two years. On behalf of the members of the Board and all mechanical engineers, I thank him for his stewardship of the Board and his strengthening of the status of the Mechanical College. For the many mechanical engineers, who I have not had the pleasure of meeting, I had best describe my background. I spent 36 years in the Army as a mechanical engineer in the Royal Corps of Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. My engineering alma maters are RMC Duntroon and RMIT. In the earlier part of my career as a maintenance engineer I worked in and commanded a number of workshops culminating in a job as workshop manager of 1200 in the UK on exchange with the British Army. As a senior officer I was predominandy involved with the maintenance and engineering policies for all three services in the Australian Defence Force.
