Propolis is produced by bees from plant resins, and has been shown to have medicinal properties (Bankova, 2009). The chemical composition of propolis is variable, depending on geographical and botanical factors. Whilst propolis obtained from the honeybee, Apis mellifera, has been characterised (Bankova, 2009), there are no similar reports for propolis from the Australian native stingless bee Trigona carbonaria. The aim of this study was to examine the chemical and biological properties of propolis produced by Trigona carbonaria.
