InP-based optoelectronic (OE) device development has a strong actual focus on cost efficiency and shorter distance communication (METRO and access networks, Gigabit Ethernet etc.). As a consequence lasers suited for uncooled operation, for Coarse WDM (CWDM) and for passive fibre chip alignment are of high current interest. Devices for high performance optical links (e.g. ultra-high bit rate) receive less general attention but are nevertheless relevant research topics, and particular compact devices can be developed on the basis of Photonic Crystals. The paper highlights corresponding recent work and indicates future development lines.
