Mutant laboratory mice as tools to study skin and hair biology

Laboratory mice are anatomically essentially the same as other mammals and get many of the same types of infectious or genetic based diseases. Therefore, approaching pathological workups of laboratory mice is essentially the same as for other mammals. Differences are that mice have been inbred and therefore genetically identical individuals are available to do repeated examinations. Longitudinal studies can be done to evaluate how disease change with age or under various types of experimental manipulations. Genetic engineering has changed biomedical research and the mouse has become the premier animal model for these types of studies.
