The magnetometer comprises a toroidal container (10) containing a paramagnetic material, has a coil (E1) wound along its length. Additional coils (E2) (E'2) are located above and below the toroidal container and coaxial with it, and they are arranged to produce opposing magnetic fields. In the vicinity of the toroidal container the opposing magnetic fields produce a resultant radial field (H1). If any ambient field (HO) passes through the toroid, two sectors of the toroid (20) (20') will have paramagnetic material subject to the ambient field (HO) and a part of the applied field (H1) at right angles to it. If the applied field is operated at the Larmor frequency there will be electronic paramagnetic resonance in the sectors (20) (20') which can be detected by the coil on the toroid (E1), and used to measure the ambient field. ADVANTAGE - Does not need to be orientated with ambient field. High sensitivity.
