A method and an apparatus for seizing and advancing pieces of cloth from a pile

The invention relates to a method for seizing and advancing one or a few pieces of cloth from a pile, wherein one first piece of cloth or a first batch of pieces of cloth is initially seized by a gripper intended therefor in such a manner that it is suspended with a front end at the gripper and a rear end substantially freely suspended at the bottom below said gripper, and subsequently by means of the gripper is lifted via a first transport path away from the pile of pieces of cloth and upwards. The invention is characterised in that the first piece of cloth or the first batch of pieces of cloth is subsequently introduced between two oppositely arranged conveyors, following which the gripper lets go of the piece(s) of cloth simultaneously with or briefly after the two conveyors press against each other and thus clamp the front end of the piece(s) of cloth and advance same there between; and wherein the gripper is, after having let go, guided via a second transport path which is different from the first transport path, away from and round the two conveyors and back to the pile of pieces of cloth with a view to seizing one other piece of cloth or another batch of pieces of cloth simultaneously with the two conveyors advancing the first piece of cloth or the first pieces of cloth there between. The invention further relates to an apparatus for exercising the invention.
