A waste water aeration unit (1) consists essentially of a support frame (2) for an air-permeable membrane (6). The frame (2) incorporates a hollow chamber (18) holding a quantity of ballast (M). The ballast (M) compensates for the upthrust caused by the unit (1) and air within the surrounding water. The unit (1) may be fixed to the bottom of a water treatment basin by e.g. a suitable bracket (16).
