The invention concerns a novel design for a supersonic aeroplane whereof the engine burn is much less than that of existing aeroplanes or those being planned. Said design is characterised by the use engines having very different characteristics. Engines with very small bypass ratio (21) are dimensioned for transonic ascent and optimised for supersonic cruise; operated at lesser power setting in order to limit noise, they are also used for take-off. One or several engines with large bypass ratio (11) are used, alone or almost for subsonic cruise and approach, with engines (21) at take-off; they are retracted inside the aeroplane in supersonic cruise.
