The invention develops a weight control system comprising administering tyrosine in the amount desired to change and maintain an animal's body weight. If the animal is overweight, the animal should be fed a low tyrosine feed composition. If the animal is underweight, the animal should be fed a high tyrosine feed composition. The invention also relates to a low tyrosine animal feed containing, on a dry matter basis: (a) from about 0.01% less than about 0.4% tyrosine, (b) from about 0.42% to about 3% phenylalanine, (c) from about 7% to about 70% protein, (d) from about 1% to about 60% fat, (e) from 0 to 90% carbohydrate, (f) from 0 to about 40% dietary fiber, and (g) from 0 to about 15% nutritional balancing agents.
