The sensor has two electromagnets (50, 60) arranged within inner side of a sensor housing (10) in a fixed position. The electromagnets are alternatively activated by excitation with electric current such that one of the electromagnets is active during a measuring cycle and the other electromagnet is active during next cycle. Each electromagnet is designed such that the electromagnet operates on a magneto-resistive measurement system in an active condition, so that the sensor generates a reference signal that corresponds to the position of the active electromagnet.
