Use of a CB1 ANTAGONIST TO TREAT SIDE EFFECTS AND NEGATIVE SYMPTOMS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA. The present invention relates to and claims a method of treating cognitive deficits in a schizophrenic patient by administering to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of a CB1 receptor antagonist as described herein. In another aspect, this invention also relates to and claims a combination of one or more CB1 receptor antagonists and one or more antipsychotic agents useful in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. The combination of this invention provides synergistic results in which the combination improves the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia while reducing weight gain and antipsychotic drug-induced catalepsy.
