The method involves dividing three-dimensional volume i.e. three-dimensional object (O), into regions, and inputting a change of representation of the volume. The change of affected areas is determined, and a ray casting is implemented by simulated beams. A change of the representation of the three-dimensional volume is performed for sample points along the beams if the sample points lie in the affected areas. A region is arranged as the affected areas if the region has non-empty intersection with the volume to be changed. Region-specific informations are stored in a list. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for changing representation of three-dimensional volume using ray casting (2) a computer program comprising a set of instructions to perform a method for changing representation of three-dimensional volume using ray casting.
