The present invention describes a novel bioadhesive intravaginal gel formulation of useful for early termination of pregnancy. The composition described in the present invention is efficacious at 6 mg/kg dose of mifepristone (RU-486). This increase in efficacy at novel low doses is attributed to the sustained release of mifepristone from the intravaginal gel composition described herein. Many of the problems associated with intravaginal delivery of mifepristone and other abortifacient agents could be overcome by the use of an intravaginal gel composition of the present invention.
