This document describes procedures used to assure the quality of ultradilute (10 part-permillion) chemical warfare agent (CWA) standards provided to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Environmental Response Laboratory Network (ERLN) laboratories for use in instrument calibration and method verification studies. The qualities of these standards are determined using high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The use of both NMR and GC/MS is necessary, because GC/MS will only detect volatile or semi-volatile impurities that are not thermally labile and NMR will detect all organic impurities.
