One is sure hard pressed to find a positive spin for native pecans today even though there was a big crop in 2012. Unfortunately the drought also continued in 2012 and for some reason the price for native pecans was pretty pathetic even though the price had been very good the last two years. Still for as long as folks can remember, this is typically the way it has been, in a big crop year, the prices are low and in a low crop year the prices are high. So, before you push out all your native pecan trees and plant corn or cotton, we need to discuss all the positives of native pecans. The list includes, but is not limited to the following: well established trees on the best pecan soils in the whole world, can be very productive, some very good nut quality, usually very few shuck problems, fairly cheap equipment that can be used to gather the crop, and in many years they can be produced with minimal inputs, including water.
