Like a marathon runner trying valiantly to make the finish line, the Georgia crop hopes to just finish the race, not worried about any records. While growers I talk to in the Perry-Fort Valley area seem to be optimistic about their crop, other areas of the state continue to be more pessimistic. Scab and related secondary diseases and physiological problems have continued the deterioration of the crop in the southern and eastern parts of the state. Very early harvest of 'Creek' and 'Caddo' show fairlygood meat yields but smaller nuts. A preliminary 'Desirable' sample followed the same pattern — average meat yields and smaller size. While the area around Perry has a sizable acreage, the 3 counties surrounding Albany contribute the major share of thestate's production and, if these areas are weak, the overall stateyield will be down.
