摘要

Canada's environmental protection agency, Environment Canada, is investigating the illegal dumping of 100 metric tons of iron sulfate and 20 tons of iron oxide into the Pacific Ocean last July by the Haida Salmon Restoration Corp. The dumping was an attempt by the corporation to fertilize the ocean in waters adjacent to Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) to promote plankton growth to enhance salmon stocks. According to Environment Canada, ocean fertilization is not allowed under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act 1999 (CEPA1999). The only exception would be in circumstances where the project has been assessed using an international framework for ocean fertilization and has been found to qualify as legitimate scientific research.
