Smelting Steel with Increased Scrap Consumption in Oxygen Converters

The oxygen-converter shop is fundamental to steel production at OAO Magnitogorskii Metallurgicheskii Kombinat (MMK): while the design output of continuous-cast slab is 9 million/t yr, the actual output is more than 10 million t/yr. The shortage of hot metal considerably complicates this enhanced production schedule. A smelting technology with increased scrap consumption has been developed to make up for this lack of hot metal.
