Range Resources Corp. made headlines this spring, reporting a horizontal St. Louis limestone well in the western Anadarko Basin that came in at 13.8 million cubic feet of gas and 903 barrels of liquids or 19.2 million cubic feet equivalent per day. Even more remarkable is that, after producing for seven months as of this July, the well was making 12.3 million cubic feet of gas and 760 barrels of liquids or 16.8 million equivalent per day from the carbonate rock. "Payout was within weeks," says Jeff Ventura, Range president and chief operating officer. It had another one under way this summer and plans three more by year-end. The St. Louis limestone is a member of the Mississippian-age limestones that are making gas liquids and oil from the northern basin along the Oklahoma and Kansas border. "When you move to the St. Louis, it's very conventional," Ventura says. "You have a really high-permeability, high-quality reservoir there as evidenced by the higher flow rate unlocked with horizontal drilling. "But you've got to find that up on a structure. So you have to have more of a conventional trap, either a closed structure or three-way closure against the fault. So they're more distinct, discrete targets that you're looking at.
