Lift safety gear testing without weights - a critique and overview

The LGI tests stipulate that a full load rated speed test is carried out on the safety gear, but allows the use of risk assessment to alter the tests or their frequency. There are concerns regarding carrying out these tests for the following reasons: 1. The effect these tests could have on the lift components, in terms of long-term invisible damage. 2. The significant increase in the length of the time of an LGI programme that included the full load test, due to the logistics of moving and storing the weights. The TUV method can be used to predict the full load free fall performance of the safety gear by merely carrying out a measurement on the empty car, during a safety gear application. Although the method makes some assumptions, these assumptions only have a small effect on the accuracy of the results. Trials on the British Columbia project and on a heavy duty lift have shown that the measurement can give a reliable prediction of the free fall full load safety gear tests deceleration, in order to comply fully with the requirements EN8 1 - 1.
