There is no dividing line between art and architecture in Robin and Erika Congreve's monolithic Takapuna home. Built in 1992, this emphatic example of international modernist design draws inspiration from some of the leading architects of the 20th century. Its iconic style makes a fitting setting for the owners' impressive collection of painting and sculpture. The Congreves are among a small number of major art collectors in New Zealand. It's a passion they've developed together over thirty years and one that puts them in an elite group, not only in terms of the dollar value of their collection but also in terms of art knowledge and patronage. (They support the Auckland Art Gallery, New Zealand Opera and the Auckland Readers and Writers Festival. With fellow art patron Jenny Gibbs they set up the Walters Prize, our most prestigious art award.)
