Effect of plant extracts against Erwinia carotovora bacterial soft rot of potatoes.

Fifteen plant extracts were evaluated for their effects on E. carotovora cultures in vitro and in vivo by assessment of relative tuber weight losses due to soft rot. Some essential oil extracts significantly decreased soft rot, especially when Rimulgan (made from castor oil) was used as a surfactant. Hemp flower extracts also decreased soft rot and inhibited tuber sprouting less than essential oils. Using potato varieties Erntestolz and Desiree, a correlation between hemp flower concentration and relative losses to rot and infection spots/tuber could be established.
