Europe Develops Guidelines for Abating Traffic Noise

A research project of the European Union (EU) has resulted in a compilation of guidelines for abating road traffic noise at the local level, including selected examples of effective highway noise abatement measures employed throughout Europe. A product of the Sustainable Mobility Initiatives for Local Environment (SMILE) program, the guidelines were developed after surveying 86 towns and cities across Europe and convening a working group of noise experts from Denmark, Germany, France, and Italy.
