Shales Drive First U.S.Gulf Coast LNG Export Deal

A contract signed last week for theliquefaction and export of domesticallyproduced natural gas lends further cred-ibility to the shale gas optimism that hasswept the energy industry in recent years,and it could quiet skeptics who think theUnited States isn’t poised to become anexporter of gas to global markets.A unit of global liquefied naturalgas (LNG) player BG Group has agreedto buy domestic LNG from CheniereEnergy Partners LP’s Sabine Pass Liquefaction LLC, marking the first sales con-tract for the company’s U.S. Gulf Coastfacility and the first for export of LNGfrom the Lower 48. The reservationcharge to be paid to Cheniere is worth$8.2 billion over the 20-year life of thecontract.
