Effects of oversowing perennial ryegrass into a hay meadow in the Belgian Ardennes.

In 1989 in the Belgian Ardennes, mixtures of Trifolium pratense cv. Krano with Dactylis glomerata cv. Baraula, Phleum pratense cv. Climax or Festuca pratensis cv. Sanu established in 1983 were untreated or oversown with Lolium perenne cv. Merlinda,Barvestra and Meltra. Assessment before oversowing showed that T. pratense had completely disappeared and that D. glomerata was more persistent than P. pratense or F. pratensis. Establishment of L. perenne was most successful on the more degraded pastures but regression was rapid, its contribution falling to <17% of sward after 4 years. The spontaneous appearance of some good forage species resulted in a proportion of good species of >40% after 10 years of utilization. Oversowing increased average forage dry matter production by 3-8% over the succeeding 6 years.
