Behavior of plantain banana in vitro plants resulting from axillary buds and shoot tips during the acclimatization phase and in the field.

During acclimatization under shade and in the field (Cameroon), we compared growth and development parameters of in vitro plants of banana cv. Big Ebanga (AAB, plantain false horn) resulting from 2 types of explants, sht and axb. Plants resulting from suckers were used as the control. Parameters measured on plants resulting from axb did not significantly vary at the end of the acclimatization phase from those evaluated on plants from sht, except for foliar ratio. Parameters of vegetative growth in the field and those related to the yield did not significantly vary between axb and sht. The percentages of reversion of the type "false horn" towards the type "french" were 0.6% for the sht plants and 1.2% for the axb plants. Plants resulting from sht and axb behaved in the same manner during the acclimatization phase and in the field. The use of axb makes it possible to increase the potentialities of in vitro production of healthy plant materials. The reversion rate of the plants given by axb was weak.
