Residue Reduction Program Success

Apple Futures--a $2.67 million dollar, three-year project to develop a production programme which produces marketable quality fruit profitably with very low pesticide residues-has just completed its third and final season, exceeding all the performance milestones it was challenged to achieve. More than two thirds of New Zealand's commercial apple growers joined the programme; Conditions were challenging over the course of the programme, with periods of high pest and disease pressure. Despite this, good quality export grade fruit with residue levels less than 10% of the maximum residue levels allowed in UK/EU markets was produced.
