The number of growers in New Zealand continues to decline as family and part-time growers move out of the business. Those that remain scale-up with hi-tech greenhouses. The New Zealand greenhouse industry of today can be characterised by the key words scoling-up, state-of-the-art, quality assurance and sustainability. New Zealand differs from many other countries by the physical distance to the major international markets and its counter-seasonal production. This determines the possibilities and limitations for the horticultural industry. Products holding well during transport are exported world-wide by sea-freight, whereas perishable fresh produce is sold largely on the domestic market or exported by air-freight to markets in the Pacific.
