On a worldwide basis the majority of greenhouses have a plastic covering. However, as greenhouses become more sophisticated and the price difference between plastic and glass becomes smaller, more glass is expected in the future. Worldwide about 95 percent of covered cultivation is in plastic covered greenhouses and just 5 percent is in glass-covered constructions. But, the expectation for the coming years is that growth of glass-covered houses will increase because the price difference between these and the high-rech plastic-covered houses is relatively small. But whatever the house, light and climate remain the important factors for optimal production.
