摘要

'And so we say farewell to British Columbia ... ', as the travelogues used to have it but, here, the message comes from redoubtable British forestry student Sam Coggins in this third and last account of his exchange-visit year in the Canadian province before embarking - after UK leave in the Chiltern Hills - on a spell of forest restoration research in northern Thailand; next stop, the University of Wales, Bangor in 2004 to finish his degree course. Before heading off to Thailand to he boiled in the heat, eaten by mosquitos and trying to avoid SARS and dengue fever, let me tell you about the week I spent in interior BC. With a weekly high of 4C and a low of - 14C - almost tropical by previous years - the climate is a little cooler than the coast due to the higher elevation. During the second semester, four of us headed up to the interior to work, have a good time and get to know the forests a little more personally, via the Alex Fraser Research Forest (AFRF), through voluntary work experience.
