As a garden designer who likes drama, I've always been a big fan of towering bulbs. I rely especially on latewinter and early-spring bloomers to kick off the growing season with a bang. As long-term investment, most bulbs are inexpensive and offer ongoing returns with little effort. And it's always easy to find a place in the garden for a few. But to get the most bang for your buck, I suggest planting bulbs in masses, whether in formal or informal settings. Particularly when combined with berennials, or as early-spring under-plantings around deciduous trees and hrubs, a mass planting of bulbs can help make the most of garden space.
